Baby This Week | 36 Weeks

Baby This Week | 36 WeeksAlrighty, welcome to week 36!  People, the countdown is nearly over.  Can you believe it?!  We are honeydew melon status this week and only getting bigger, so hear goes!

The Facts – Baby’s head is specially designed to travel through the cervix and pelvis. The bones in the skull aren’t fused together yet; this loose construction makes baby’s head very shapeable so it can squeeze through the birth canal without harming them or myself. The bones will gradually fuse over the first year of life.  Little one weighs approximately between 4.2- to 5.8- pounds this week and measures nearly 19-21inches.  Baby will continue to develop about a half ounce of fat a day.  Baby has a few final developments taking place in week 37:

20 Week Anatomy Scan

First off let me begin by saying that it was absolutely wonderful to see baby yesterday.  Baby was super active during the ultrasound, but did cooperate so that the tech was able to get all of her pictures.  Oh and we are still team GREEN!  We actually had to look away for several parts of the scan, because when she did the lower half of the body we didn’t want to see anything.  It was really cool, because that was the first thing we said to her, and she was awesome about telling us to look away.  I think, however, that I have an inkling but I go back and forth all the time.  Its funny, because when I first found out I was pregnant I thought the baby was one gender and then a few weeks later I thought it was the other gender.  Recently, I’ve been at a complete lost for what baby could be and I want to keep it that way.

Now, to the scan part…well, I don’t have much to say, because a tech did the scan and she wasn’t able to really tell us anything while she was doing it.  She will formulate a report and send it back to the Dr’s office and they will review it and discuss it with me at my next visit.  Unless, I receive a phone call from my PA, then I can assume al is well.  I do have to admit that I was pretty bummed by this.  It would have been nice to have had some one go through and talk us through the enitre scan and tell us about the baby.  From what I could see though, baby looked really good and healthy.  This is the only ultrasound I will have, provided there’s no reason for me to have to get another one at my PA’s request, so until baby comes out this is the only time I will see him or her.

The scan itself took about 30-40 mins, and she gave us about 7 or so pics.  We did see the baby yawning, which was so cute and even saw at one point the baby’s hands clasped together.  The ironic thing about the hands being clasped is that I was doing the exact same thing at the exact same time.  The tech ended up giving us a snapshot of that too.  Baby was pretty agitated after the scan and was moving and bouncing around for the rest of the night.  The only part of the scan that was a little uncomfortable was having to have a full bladder and when she had to press firmly on my hips near my hip and pelvic bone to get a pic of my cervix and measure it.  Otherwise, everything was good and seamless.

Bonus shot of baby!

Pregnancy Knowledge | Stretch Marks

StretchMarkPrevention
I’ve heard that stretch marks are genetic mostly, or rather not getting them is a matter of whether you’re susceptible to them genetically.  My mother did not get any stretch marks throughout her three pregnancies that were lasting or noticeable.  If I remember correctly, from what she told me, she ended up with one on her belly, but I do not know which pregnancy it came from of hers.  Anyhow, it’s not even noticeable and I couldn’t even see it when she showed it to me.  I’m hoping to have the same results.  So far I have not seen any, but I’m still pretty early in my pregnancy.  I have been oiling up and moisturizing since the day I found out I was pregnant.  I’ve used Bio Oil, which is really good stuff, but I’m not a fan of the smell and it tends to be pretty pricey.  I do know, however, that they sell it at Sam’s for a really good deal.  Regularly, I use Palmer’s Skin Therapy Oil, Tummy Butter, Cocoa Butter Formula, and Stretch Mark Massage Cream.  I am very consistent with my application and never scratch when my skin starts to itch.  There are a tone of products on the market that claim to prevent stretch marks, reduce the appearance, and even get rid of them.  I’m not going to use everything under the sun just to prevent them, but I will stay with the set regimen I’m on, because it seems to be working.

My mom used a product called “Mother’s Friend” which is apparently still on the market.  It’s supposedly available in drugstores and for order online.  I’ve heard great things about the Burt’s Bees Mama Butter, which I’ve seen at Target.  It definitely on the higher-end of these type of products, retailing for over $20.  With so many products out there to try, it’s extremely tempting to become a product junkie and want to try everything.  The important thing to remember is that whatever you put on your skin goes to the baby.  I want to minimize what all my skin takes in, so that the baby isn’t exposed to unnecessary chemicals and potentials toxins.

To be honest I wouldn’t really say with confidence that there is a legitimate way to prevent stretch marks.  I really do think it comes down to if your skin has good elasticity and the rate at which your grow.  I’ve been moisturizing for as long as I can remember, and with my genetics I’m hoping it’s enough so that I don’t look like a striped tiger after baby.

Happy Bumping!

Baby this week | 17 weeks

The Facts - Baby is now about the size of a turnip or onion (depending on which app you are using). Little one is roughly five inches long, and weighs five ounces (which is more than the placenta weighs). Baby has developed fat deposits under his skin that will account for about 2 to 6 percent of his total body weight at his time of birth, just 23 weeks from now. Baby’s skeleton, which up until this point has been made up of flexible cartilage, is now hardening into bone. Most exciting, baby’s sense of hearing begins to develop this week.

Me – As far as symptoms go, I am feeling pretty good.  No major complaints or anything like that.  Sleeping has been the biggest issue.  It has been really hard staying comfortable throughout the night.  I still get up and pee at least once a night, and of course several times throughout the day.  My belly has grown significantly over the past week, which is really exciting.  I still feel like most people can’t really tell I’m pregnant, but that’s okay I’ve always been a slow grower.  My energy level is definitely up and probably at an all time high during this pregnancy.  I do go to sleep around 11:00-11:30 most nights like clockwork.  I even fell asleep at the end of one of my fave shows this week, Scandal.  My appetite has been kicking up, but still not where I feel it should be.  I eat when I’m supposed, at least during the week, I’m not so good on the weekends however.  I crave sweets and fruits still, but I have been eating more meats.  The one thing I know I need to pick back up on are my veggies, haven’t been too good about eating those lately.

Baby – Baby has been moving and very active this week.  Although the movements are subtle I feel them at least daily.  I have a Doppler which allows me to listen to the heartbeat and I can also hear the baby moving around.  I try not to use it too often, because I don’t like disturbing the baby.  I used it today and the baby baby kicked really, so much that the wand moved in my hand.  That was my cue from the baby that it did not like the Doppler, probably because it is really loud to the baby and it probably startled it.  I know last week during Iron Man 3, the baby was kicking up a storm, because the sound was so loud and intense from the movie.  I’m interested to see what type of personality this kid comes out with, because mines is all over the place.  I feel like the baby will be laid back with a feisty edge, which is pretty much like me (most times).  Although, if its anything like my husband, we have a lot of “fun” in store, yikes!

Hubs – speaking of him, he is doing good and feeling more attached to the baby every day.  He is really enjoying the weight I have put on, because most of it has gone straight to my boobs and booty.  He likes to talk to the baby and tell it things about me, so that’s really cute.  Hubs is extremely excited about becoming a Dad and does everything he can to make me comfortable.  He gives me countless foot massages daily and lubs me down with tummy better, oil, and lotion most every night.  He’s a real trooper, because he has definitely been through the ringer already and we are still pretty early in pregnancy.  He knows, when I’m happy, he’d happy.  Happy wife, happy life!

That’s all for now folks!

Happy bumping!
